About ASOMR

The American Society of Osteopathic Medical Regulators (ASOMR), formerly the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners (AAOE), is comprised of all osteopathic physicians (DOs) who sit on a United States licensing board, be it an osteopathic board or a composite (DO/MD) board. All US states, territories and the District of Columbia grant DOs full, unlimited physician licensure for the practice of medicine and surgery, equivalent to MDs.
At present, there are 12 osteopathic boards and 39 composite boards. Of these composite boards, 31 reserve positions for osteopathic physicians, and DOs are currently represented on 49 of the 51 state medical boards of the states and the District of Columbia. The two states without the representation of an osteopathic physician are: Louisiana and Massachusetts.
A note on our name change: In April 2024, the organization voted to change its name from AAOE to ASOMR to reflect the fact that US licensing boards no longer administer “examinations” to applicants, which is now done by external examining bodies. The new name better reflects DOs’ roles on medical boards as “osteopathic medical regulators.”

ASOMR Strategic Plan
ASOMR’s core activities fit into three main categories:

- Leadership Development and Education – of regulatory stakeholders regarding the distinctive role and value of the osteopathic profession.
- Communications – among internal stakeholders regarding issues and trends impacting osteopathic medical regulation, and externally regarding the distinctive osteopathic medical model.
